Seventh Annual Lighthouse Challenge 2009
September 19-20, 2009

The weekend weather was perfect for the annual Lighthouse Challenge, sponsored by the Chesapeake Chapter of the US Lighthouse Society. Saturday morning our volunteers greeted 593 visitors. On Sunny Sunday, we welcomed 505 visitors. This second day of the Challenge was also the anniversary of the lighting of the lighthouse, which was first put in to service 179 years ago on September 20, 1830. Happy Anniversary to the Point Lookout Lighthouse!

Point Lookout had one of the first finishers for the Challenge this year! An unusual accomplishment given the isolated location of the lighthouse. We were just 2 visitors shy of having 1100 visitors for the Challenge weekend. We extend our thanks and congratulations to the Chesapeake Chapter of the US Lighthouse Society for another very successful lighthouse challenge, which was even more challenging than usual given the current state of the economy.

We would like to thank all of the volunters from PLLPS and the Chesapeake Chapter who made the Point Lookout stop of Lighthouse Challenge 2009 a resounding success! And an extra special thanks to volunteer Chuck Kohls who prepared lunch both days and dinner on Saturday evening, in addition to his role as site coordinator for Point Lookout.
