October 30, 2012 Hurricane Sandy Causes Damage to the Lighthouse Complex

October 30, 2012

Hurricane Sandy flooded the area around the lighthouse complex and caused some damage to the lighthouse and the coal shed. The north side kitchen and dining room had water leakage, as did the north side kitchen. Everything outside the lighthouse floated toward the bay side fence, including our picnic table and benches. The steps on the Potomac River side of the lighthouse were also damaged, with one board floating all the way to the bay side fence. Vinyl siding from the southernmost coal shed was peeled back by the high winds. Buoys in the Potomac River reported 9 foot waves and wind gusts of 75 mph were reported near the point. Fort Lincoln in the park also sustained damaged and lost several trees as the winds and rain blasted the area from the western side.
